If you are looking to start a career why not look at recruiting? What does a career in recruitment entail? In fact, what exactly is an recruiter? Let’s find out.

Recruiting also known as head hunting is a profession that is often misunderstood or misrepresented. In fact, even a lot of people within similar industries know very little about the world of recruitment. One of the main reason for this is that there are many different types of recruiters. There are corporate recruiters, contingency recruiters, etc. Let’s dive into the different kind of recruiters and their job descriptions.

Corporate recruiters are basically employees of a company whose main job is to seek out and qualify potential new employees for their company. Sometimes, a company will hire a sub contractor to do the same job. They are usually known as third party corporate recruiters. There are several types of them and most are paid on some sort of commission or performance based incentives.

Recruiters are almost always paid by the company that they were hired by. There is a type of recruiter known as the retained recruiter and they usually have some sort of exclusive deal with the company they are recruiting for. They usually have some sort of compensation before the hiring and recruiting session. The rest of their fee is paid after hiring a qualified candidate. Most retained recruiter searches for high level and executive level jobs.

Majority of recruiters belong in the category known as contingency recruiter. They are only compensated when finding a successful recruit. They do not have any exclusive deals or territory with the hiring companies.

What does this job entail?

Recruiters must start to establish themselves within their territory. Some recruiters specialize in a certain kind of job (IT Recruiters for example) while as others deal in a broader spectrum of jobs (Customer Service, Executives, etc). You should start to network with different companies as well as employees that might fit your criteria. To start establishing contacts you can cold call different companies to get a recruiting contract with them. After successfully landing a recruitment deal you now must start looking for suitable employee to fill position. You can cold call employees at different companies, post ads online, use various other marketing methods to land that deal.

How are you compensated and how much?

Recruiters are usually given between 20 to 30 percent of the new employees first year salary. So, for example if you land a candidate with a first year salary of $80,000 you might be able to get anywhere between $8,000 to $12,000 or even more depending on the position.

Recruitment is a lucrative field for someone working hard and with the proper knowledge of their field. If you work hard and start making the right contacts you will enjoy a great and successful career as a recruiter.
